Island Games

BRONZE FOR HUGHES

Menai's Iolo Hughes had to settle for the bronze medal in the 5,000m at the Island Games in Jersey, finishing in 14:32.14 behind Harvey Dixon (Gibraltar) and Christopher Estwarick (Bermuda).

 The Bermudan went one better in the half-marathon, clocking 67.15. David Lemon (Deeside), representing Ynys Mon, came 22nd in 81.39.

 In the women's half-marathon Sarah Livett, competing beyond her normal distance, came 17th in 92.50, while her brother Shaun took fifth place in the Shot in which he was up against GB senior international Zane Duquemin.

EGGSELENT WIN FOR BACON

After an exciting  contest in which it was nip-and-tuck with veteran Rob Grantham Eryri's Jim Bacon just managed to take the overall title in the Joe Brown Tuesday Night Series.

 It was much more clear-cut in the women's competition, with Lauren Jeska winning from teenager Bronwen Jenkinson.

Willis gets GB vest

WILLIS OFF TO SPAIN

Wrexham's Matthew Willis is one of the country's top young running prospects but his talents go wider than that, as he proved at the Blenheim Youth Sprint Triathlon.

 The 15-year-old finished  fifth overall but was first under 17, qualifying  him for the Great Britain tea m for the European Youth Relay Championships in Banyoles, Spain, on July 25-26.

 It is an outstanding achievement as he is two years younger than most of the other members of the six-strong GB team.

PB for Malone

MALONE GETS CLOSER TO QUALIFYING

Deeside teenager Shannon Malone is edging ever closer to the qualifying time for the European U20 championship.

 At Mannheim in Germany she set a new pb of 11.75 in the 100m heat then in the "A" final came second in 11.91 into a -1.4 headwind.

 The 18-year-old is now ranked fifth in the UK under-20 and has her sights set on the qualifying time of 11.65.

Welsh Champs

DOUBLE GOLD FOR ANYA

Young Menai sprinter Anya Williams was one of the stars of the Welsh track and field championships in Cardiff with a double gold-winning performance.

 She followed up her 28.56 victory in the U13 200m by taking the 100m title in 13.74.

 The Menai club had another different " double" to  celebrate with Osian Perrin and Cari Hughes both winning their 1,500m races. Osian's time of 4-42.63 was just two seconds outside the U13 record.

 In the senior men's discus Osian Jones was well outside the Welsh record but had the satisfaction of claiming a new championship best performance - albeit by the narrowest of margins of just one centimetre.

 Commonwealth silver medallist Sally Peake was also below her best with a clearance of 4.05m and was well beaten by England's Holly Bradshaw.

Busy weekend

THREE INTO TWO FOR W ATHAN

With so many events on over the weekend several runners "doubled up", but among the busiest must have been Eryri's Paul Wathan.

 On Friday evening he finished sixth in the Snowdon Twilight race, then about 12 hours later he was just beaten into second place in the Conwy Parkrun. The following day he was in action a third time,  winning the 5k event at the Rhyl Festival.

 His partner Gemma Morgans was not quite so ambitious, finishing first in the Conwy Parkrun and then second in the 10k at Rhyl.

Tim Higginbottom had a comfortable win in the 12-mile Foel Fras race, with runner-up Mark Davies having competed in the Snowdon Twilight race less than 12 hours earlier.

TOSH TOP AT THE TOP

 Former Loughborough student Sam Tosh made a bit of history when he won the first ever Snowdon Twilight race to the summit.

 An ex-member of Rossendale, now with Reigate Priory, he may have been largely unknown to many of the other competitors but has a recent history, having  finished second in the Ben Nevis race two years ago.

 The experimental race attracted a good field from a wide area,  with 75 finishers.

Youth Mountain Cup

FOUR N WALIANS IN SQUAD

North Wales clubs provide four of the six members of the Welsh squad for this weekend's International Youth Cup being staged by the World Mountain-Running Association in Smoylan, Bulgaria.

 The teams are:- Boys: Joseph Critchley (Maldwyn), Cai Linton-Davies (Menai), John Spill,(Eryri). Girls: Mollie Davies (Menai), Caitlin Page (Sarn Helen) and  Fion Quan (Sarn Helen).

 The boys will run 5.4k and the girls 3.6k.

Stone 10k

GOOD AND NOT SO GOOD NEWS AT STONE

The match against Staffordshire produced home wins for the men and women but there was still plenty to be pleased about for the North Wales squad in the Stone 10k.

 Katie Parry (Leeds) was first lady in both the inter-regional and open race, while 18-year-old Owen Roberts had a cracking debut for the region, finishing fourth overall and Dean Longley (Prestatyn) came right back to form.

 It was not such a happy day for Amie Bagnall (Salford), who was on course for a pb when she was knocked to the ground and trampled on. Despite suffering cuts and bruises she managed to finish.

 The North Wales results were: Dean Longley 33.53, Owen Roberts (Eryri) 34.20, John Morris (Denbigh) 34.25 (pb), Gary Wyn Davies (Aberystwyth) 35.49, Katie Parry 37.19, Anest Muller (West Chesh) 41.13, Gemma Morgans 42.45, Amie Bagnall 46.39.

 There is just no stopping Cheshire's  flying cop Rob Grantham these days. His remarkable run of top-three placings continues when he won the Hotfoot up Famau race, the first of the three-race Clwydian Hill series.

English U20/23 champs

ANOTHER PB FOR  HUGHES

Menai's Iolo Hughes continued his sparkling form at the English U20 and 23 track and field championships in Bedford, slicing 10 seconds off his 5k pb while coming seventh in the final in 14-32.3.

 The 18-year-old is off to Jersey next week to try to retain his title in the Island Games.

 Deeside sprinter Shannon Malone took bronze in the U23 100m. S he won her heat in 11.87, came second in the semi-final in 11.91 and then clocked 11.88 in the final.

 Among other North Wales medallists were Adele Nicol (Birchfield) from Welshpool, who won the U20 shot with a pb of 15.23m,  almost two metres further than the runner-up, and Nathan Thomason (Colwyn Bay) had silver in the U18 discus  with a throw of 49.35m.

Deniolen 10k

VISITORS STEAL THE SHOW

Two visitors dominated proceedings in the Deiniolen 10k, one of the toughest in North Wales which includes two testing climbs.

 First home was Ryan Parker (Bedford and County) in the remarkable time of 33.33, with Philip Cooper (Hallamshire) second in 35.57.

 Twenty-four-year-old Parker has some pedigree, having come second in this year's Bedfordshire cross-country championships and he is a former AAA 1,500m champion.

 Cooper, too, has been in good form, coming second in last Saturday's Penrhyn Parkrun behind teenager John Spill.

Tal y Mignedd

RECORDS TUMBLE - YET AGAIN

As in previous races in the Joe Brown Series a host of records tumbled in the Tal y Mignedd trace which was won comfortably by Mathew Roberts.

 With one race left in the 10-race series R ob Grantham (Chester Tri) and Jim Bacon (Eryri), who were second and fourth respectively this week,  are both still in with a chance of winning the aggregate  title.

Potters Arf

NORTH WALIANS IN ACTION AT HANLEY

Only a handful of North Walians travelled to Hanley at the weekend for the Potters Arf half-marathon, and among the results were: 49 David Millington (Wrexham) 87.31, 53 Shaun Davies (Eryri) 87.45, 56 Craig Prandle (Wrex) 87.53, 102 Russell Williams (Cybi) 91.02, 120 Andy Jones (NWRR) 93.12, 407 Fred Maier (Eryri) 1-46.57.

 

Masters' Champs

JONES DOES MASTERS DOUBLE

Wrexham's Bernie Jones, who is getting back to full fitness again after a long lay-off, did the "double" at the Welsh Masters' track and field championships, winning bot the M55 1,500m and 5,000m. His respective times were 4-54.7 and 10-16.8.

Notts 10m

N WALES LADIES SHINE

Two of North Wales' best distance runners claimed top 10 places in the Notts 10-mile race at Holme Pierrepoint at the weekend .
Katie Parry (Leeds City) was 51st  overall and fourth lady in 61.07, just four seconds outside her pb, and Sarah Livett (Menai), home from her studies in the States, was 61st overall and 10th lady in 62.47.

Parkruns

LONGLEY CLAIMS EASY WIN

A week after completing the final stage of the Welsh Castles Relay into Cardiff Prestatyn's Dean Longley was in South Wales again, this time claiming victory in the Parc Bryn Bach Parkrun near Merthyr.

 He finished  about a minute clear of his closest challenger in 16.40,  considerably faster than his time in last month's Taste Academy 5k in Rhyl.

 Meanwhile sisters Mia and Neisha Roberts  were again in great form in the Conwy Parkrun. Mia, 12, was first lady home and  fifth overall in  19.46, with 10-year-old Neisha 22nd overall and fifth lady in 22.48 despite having to stop to deal with a shoe problem.

Up The Beast

GRANTHAM CONQUERS THE BEAST

Prolific racer Rob Grantham continued his exceptional form by winning the Up The Beast race at Maeshafn, just 24 hours after coming third in Y Garn race. It was a family "double" as his wife Lisa, who had also run the previous evening, was  first lady home.

 After last year's thunderstorms conditions were ideal this time and all 96 competitors completed the course - the first time in the history of the race.

Y Garn

SIX RECORDS GO ON Y GARN

 Perfect  conditions contributed to six records being broken in the eighth race in the Joe Brown Tuesday Evening Series on Y Garn, with overall winner Paul Jenkinson setting a new M40 best.

 He won by six seconds from Nathan Jones (Liverpool Harriers), who is home from the United States  but will be returning in a month's time to get in  some hill training.

Deestriders' Off-Road GP (1)

RACE DOUBLE FOR DAVIES

Wrecsam Tri veteran Helen Davies completed a fine double when she followed up her win in the opening race of Deestriders' Of-Road Grand Prix Series on Thursday with victory in Sunday's Mersey Tunnel 10k, where her time was 40.10.

 The Shotton race was won by Dean Longley (Prestatyn), who finished 36 seconds ahead of Rob Grantham (Chester Tri), competing in his third race in five days.

After several top-10 performances veteran John Parkinson claimed his first victory in this year's Joe Brown Tuesday Evening Series in the testing  3 Hills Race at Penmaenmawr.

 He finished 18 seconds clear of fellow veteran Rob Grantham, who won the Excalibur half-marathon in the Clwydians just 48 hours earlier.

 It was a race dominated by veterans, one of the best performances again coming from over-60 Stephen P Jones, who finished seventh overall.

Brother and sister Iolo and Cari Hughes (Menai) recorded yet more pbs in the latest BMC Grand Prix meeting in Manchester's Sportcity.

 In the 800m "D" race Cari finished second in 2-12.33 while Iolo came 14th in the "A"   5,000m in a time of 14-41.98.

 In the ladies' "B" 800m race former Colwyn Bay athlete Georgina Outten (Birchfield) finished sixth in 2-07.55.
