Grand Prix Express NWCC League (2)

DEJA VU AT LLANDUDNO

It was a case of "as you were" in the second fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League at St David's College, Llandudno, with the under-17 men's, senior men's and women's races all being  won by the same athletes as at Bangor two weeks earlier.

In the senior races the  runners-up were also the same.

In the team competition Bangor University, who were promoted at the end of last season, consolidated their position at the top of Division 1 while Eryri ladies extended their lead, once again turning out in large numbers.

Cardiff Half

ROBERTS AND CROWE SHINE IN CARDIFF

North Wales 5k and 10k champion Tomos Roberts (Meirionnydd) had another cracking run in the Cardiff half-marathon which attracted a quality field.

A name from the past

REMEMBER HIM?

One name caught my eye while scanning the results of  the recent Sandstone Trail 17-miler and it will probably be familiar to other super-vets like myself.

In 56th place in the event was a certain Gerry Helme, who, at the age of 57, clocked a highly creditable 2-30.04.

The former St Helens and Sutton athlete was once a familiar on the North Wales  road-running scene, winning the Prestatyn half-marathon in the '80s.

In 1983 he came second in the London Marathon in 2-10.12 behind fellow Englishman Mike Gratton and his pb for a half-marathon was 62.51.

MOUNTFORD WINS N WALES  DUEL

Several young Welsh athletes have been showing good form for their colleges in the United States recently.

Former Deeside AC member David Mountford (Oklahoma Uni) came up against his Liverpol Harrier clubmate Nathan Jones (McNeese) in the Chile Pepper Festival cross-country match in Fayetteville, Arizona. Mountford, the former North Wales 5-mile champion,  finished 26th overall in 24.49, with Jones 30 place behind in 25.19.

Meanwhile in the Louisville Classic Sarah Livett (Menai and Alabama Uni) was 48th in 17.54, but her recent good form led to her being featured as the University's Athlete of the Week.

At the Paul Short Invitational Meeting in Bethlehem, Philadelphia, Sarah's fellow Welsh international Rhiannedd Price (Cardiff and Mississipi State) from Llandrindod finished 10th.
